American Sign Language

Many people want to learn sign language, they just do not know where to begin or just have never gotten around to it. The good news is that it is never too late to learn another language. Like learning anything else, sign language takes effort, time and initiative to learn. If you decide that this is what you want to do, here are some helpful tips to get you started on your path of learning a new language.

First, like with any language, you should start with learning the alphabet. This is not a very difficult task; it did not take me very long to learn the signing alphabet. The reason for learning the alphabet first is because the alphabet is the foundation for any language. The best way to start learning the American Sign Language alphabet is to do the signs while speaking the letter. That way it sinks in and it is quick and easy to learn.

Of course, my method of learning is the best way I learned how to sign but that does not mean that it is best for everyone who wants to learn. My suggestion is that you develop your own learning system and use what is best for you. There are tons of videos out there to help you if you happen to be a visual learner. If you learn by reading, there are also many books to help you learn.

Second, finger spelling is a great way to get even more familiar with the letters of the alphabet. Finger spelling is the art of spelling out words with the signs for the letters in the words. Once you have gotten the hang of the alphabet, try spelling out simple words or even your name. This should be a fun activity. See if you can remember the signs for all the letters in your full name or even your significant others name.

Once you have successfully mastered the letters and can move through a simple word quickly and without pausing you can move on to more complex words. There are plenty of recourses out there to help you with this particular part of learning American Sign Language. Try this, pick up a dictionary and skim through it. Find a word that is not too easy but not too hard and fingerspell it. This is great practice.

Last, it is time to move on to words and sentences. You should always start small and move your way up. This is probably the most difficult part to learn. American Sign Language is very in-depth and once you begin researching it yourself you will see what I mean by in-depth. With this part of your learning quest, it is wise to seek professional assistance. You can take a class or get private lessons.

Did you know that you could also teach infants and small children to sign? This can help bridge the communication gap between adults and children that have not developed comprehensive speech. Studies have shown that infants and children who learn to sign before they speak have a less frustrating time communicating with adults. An infant can learn to sign as young as 6 months. There are many learning devices out there that will help your child learn to sign before he or she can talk.

Quick ASL Tip #1

Don't be intimidated. Often people are intimidated by having to understand signs instead of spoken words. Just relax and remember that as you become more proficient at it you will get quicker at recognising the signs and even recognising signs that you don't know the meaning of so that you can ask the signer what it means.

Quick ASL Tip #2

Get out and meet some people. This may seem trivial but you will learn a lot faster if you can get out there and start to communicate with real people using ASL. By having them correct you and watching what they do you will accelerate your learning.

Quick ASL Tip #3

Take your time. Nobody learns anything instantly, as you see the signs repeatedly they will start to embed themselves in your mind and you will start to recognise them. Stick at it and make sure you focus on what you are learning to get the best results, also remember that practice makes perfect!
