American Sign Language DVD

Sign language has been around for centuries. American Sign Language (ASL) started with a man named Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet who went to Europe to learn sign language because of his interest in communicating with a neighbor's deaf daughter. Gallaudet started the first school for the deaf in America. Since the schools founding, a lot of people, not only the deaf, have been interested in learning ASL.

Many Americans have wanted to learn ASL but has never gotten around to it or thought it was too late and they were too old. I am here to tell you that it is never too late and you are never too old to learn something new, especially something like a new language. Now is a great time to begin learning sign language for whatever reason it is that you want to. You should never put off until tomorrow what you could begin today.

There are many ways to learn ASL. First and foremost, you should always start off small. You should start learning the ASL alphabet. The alphabet is really easy to learn and should not take very long. Next, test your skills at the alphabet with finger spelling words. Again you should start off small and with simple words such as fun and jelly. Once you think are getting pretty good at the smaller words, start on some more complex words.

The last step in learning how to sign is learning words and phrases. This is the most difficult of all. There are many ways to go about learning the gestures for words and phrases. One of the best is to get an American Sign Language DVD. This is one of the best because you can see how the gestures are done and then repeat then as many times as necessary (imagine asking a tutor to repeat it 20 times...). Ever heard the phrase "Monkey see, monkey do?" Well in this case, that is exactly what you do and in my opinion it is the best way to learn.

Of course you could always go visit your local library and pick up a book or two on learning sign language but who would want to? Books are good for learning some things but when learning a new language you need to be about to hear, or in this case see what the word is to be able to do the gesture correctly. American Sign Language DVD courses are essential for anyone trying to teach or learn ASL.

There are also American Sign Language DVD courses for infants and small children. It has been proven that children can learn sign language and communicate with adult's way before they can talk. A baby can learn how to sign as young as 6 months of age. An infant who learns to sign will have a less frustrating time communicating what they need or want to their parents.

Quick ASL Tip #1

Don't be intimidated. Often people are intimidated by having to understand signs instead of spoken words. Just relax and remember that as you become more proficient at it you will get quicker at recognising the signs and even recognising signs that you don't know the meaning of so that you can ask the signer what it means.

Quick ASL Tip #2

Get out and meet some people. This may seem trivial but you will learn a lot faster if you can get out there and start to communicate with real people using ASL. By having them correct you and watching what they do you will accelerate your learning.

Quick ASL Tip #3

Take your time. Nobody learns anything instantly, as you see the signs repeatedly they will start to embed themselves in your mind and you will start to recognise them. Stick at it and make sure you focus on what you are learning to get the best results, also remember that practice makes perfect!
